It is normal for you to feel soreness during orthodontic treatment, and it should be comforting to know that genuine orthodontic emergencies are rare. If you think you may have an emergency on your hands, it is important to assess the severity of the problem. Answer the following questions: Is this an urgent situation that requires immediate attention? Or, is this issue minor enough to take care of myself, even if temporarily, until I can make an appointment?

 Major Emergencies

In the rare case that you experience an orthodontic emergency, you should seek help as soon as possible. This includes:

  • Trauma or injury to any part of the teeth, face or mouth
  • Infection or noticeable swelling of the mouth, face or gums
  • Severe discomfort or pain in any of these related areas

In the case that you are experiencing any of these emergencies, you should seek a professional’s help as soon as possible. Generally, we recommend that you start by calling your regular dentist, as dentists are trained to handle a wide range of oral issues. If they are unavailable, or if you know that your situation is more serious, go to the nearest emergency room. If you are in an emergency and choose to wait to get help, you run the risk of having to deal with more pain and a more expensive visit later on.

Minor Orthodontic Issues

Almost all orthodontic problems are minor and will only cause minor discomfort or irritation and can be taken care of at home. In these situations, we recommend that you try to soothe the discomfort, and then call our office to schedule an appointment so we can double check that the issue isn’t related to anything more serious. If you experience any of the following, be assured that you are not in an emergency, and take the following steps in order to ease any irritation:

  • Loose or Broken Wires, Brackets, or Bands: A lot of the time, this problem is caused by eating certain foods including candies that are hard or sticky. Other times, this can be a result of playing with your braces. In this situation, and if the band or bracket is still attached to the wire, leave it as is, and do not connect any elastics to it. If the inside of your mouth is irritated, you may cover the area with orthodontic wax. If any part of your braces comes off, please save whatever it is and bring it into our office at your appointment.
  • Archwire, Brackets, or Ties That Are Misplaced or Poking Your Mouth: If any brackets or archwire begin to poke and irritate the inside of your mouth, this could be a result of your teeth beginning to move. In this case, try moving the wire into a better position, or apply wax if applicable. You may also try to cut the end of the wire off with a nail clipper (once it is sterilized in alcohol). Before cutting anything, though, please call our office so we can offer guidance and instructions. Tweezers may also be enough to gentle move a wire that is causing any irritation.
  • Looseness or General Tooth Pain: If you start to experience loosening of your teeth, do not worry, this shows that treatment is working and your teeth are beginning to shift! When your teeth move in this way, it is normal to experience tenderness or discomfort. For any soreness or minor pain, you can use regular over-the-counter pain reliever. We also recommend a salt-water rinse twice a day. To do this, mix one teaspoon of salt in an 8-ounce glass of warm water, and rinse/gargle for 30 seconds. A heating pad or warm washcloth placed on the outside of your jaw can also help to offer relief. No matter what your orthodontic issue is, big or small, please don’t hesitate to call us. It’s what we are here for!
